How do you find a reputable security company?

The international demand for security of all types is at its highest, and is increasing at a staggering rate.

In response to this demand we have seen an explosion of private security companies ranging from those providing Static Security Guards patrolling building sites, to the all out Private Military Firms. The sheer numbers involved and lax regulations within the industry dictate massively varying standards and abilities from one Organisation to another.

So when faced with the requirement to let Security into your life, how do you select the right group of individuals to secure your most prized assets and protect you, your family, or your business interests?

The deployment of a Close Protection Group (or “Bodyguards”) is common whilst operating in a Hostile Environment, after a Threat of Violence or Kidnap has been made, or indeed an attempt on someone’s life.

The mere presence of a Professional Security Detail is often enough to deter any attempt to disrupt or disable the life of the Client. A well trained and experienced team will continuously minimise risk wherever practicable, and any potential assailants will often not have the time, manpower, resources, opportunity, and also the courage to go through with an attempt whilst a Close Protection Group is in place.

If desired the security detail can be as discreet as the situation allows, allowing the client the sense of freedom to go about their daily routine without being hemmed in by an over zealous Close Protection Operative.

The selection process is therefore critical when sifting through the potential companies and there are some golden rules that must be followed.

Rule 1 - Are they appropriately Licensed?

All security personnel in the England and Wales have to be licensed by the Security Industry Authority.

This involves a standard course followed by a test process and if the applicant is successful, he/she is then subject to a Criminal Record Bureau check and then issued with an ID card from the SIA that is valid for three years. It is imperative that you check that all employees of your chosen Security Company hold a Front Line SIA licence in accordance with the field in which they are operating.

Rule 2 - Do they recruit the right people?

The implementation of the SIA License saw a sharp rise in training facilities. Unfortunately many of these produced substandard operators, and the market has been flooded.

These individuals have found their way into Companies by fabricating CVs and previous employment references. This issue is compounded by the fact some Security Firms do not hire appropriate personnel for HR/Recruitment roles, and these people are unable to authenticate an applicants claims - therefore it is imperative that you discuss any Potential Suppliers interview and selection process.

Rule 3 - Do I trust them?

When selecting the right firm to protect you or your assets, it is important to establish their credibility.

Aside from the Licensing aspect already mentioned, you must also be sure that they are able to meet your requirements operationally, that they are fully insured, that they have sufficient administration procedures and audit trails in place, that they operate with due diligence, have a Confidentiality agreement, and that above all you have confidence in the abilities and moral code of the people you are dealing with.

REMEMBER - There are many Private Security Companies offering their Services, do not settle for one that “will do”, shop around until you are 100% satisfied that you have found the right Organisation for you.
